The AutoCAD story began in 1981 with a group of users in the technical computing department at the University of Illinois at Chicago who were interested in developing a CAD system that would run on their personal computers. The Illinois students began working on what would become AutoCAD by bringing their own ideas for features they wanted to include and that other users might find useful.
Early users were impressed with what they saw as they experimented with using the software on the university computers. The first AutoCAD version was completed in September 1982. From the beginning, Autodesk has a dual mission: to serve the user with a high quality software application, and to provide a source of operating revenue through the sale of AutoCAD (among other products) and professional services.
AutoCAD 2.0 was the first major overhaul of AutoCAD since its introduction in 1982. Two of the key new features were the ability to import and export CAD drawings from other applications and the creation of the hierarchical list, which listed objects and groups in a hierarchical fashion, instead of a linear list.
In 1983, the first major release of AutoCAD was followed by the release of a stand-alone Macintosh product called AutoCAD SE for the Apple Macintosh computer. AutoCAD SE offered most of the features of AutoCAD 2.0, but was much cheaper.
In 1985, the first major expansion of AutoCAD was the release of AutoCAD for Windows. The release of AutoCAD for Windows marked the beginning of Autodesk’s commercial products, including the Autodesk Inventor product and Autodesk Inventor Professional. Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Inventor Professional are very similar in nature and can be used interchangeably. Inventor/Professional is a graphical interface for all the key functions of AutoCAD 2.5 and later.
AutoCAD had two original programmability languages: AutoLISP and ADF. AutoLISP was used for key drawing automation functions such as drawing, moving, cutting, copying, pasting, etc. AutoLISP scripts were run during the drawing session, either from the command line or the user interface. ADF was used to script the user interface and other functions of AutoCAD. ADF runs outside of AutoCAD in a separate environment and, unlike AutoLISP, did not have access to the drawing or object data. It was

AutoCAD can export all the drawings in the active drawing session to files in a format that can be read by other AutoCAD programs. These are called DWG (Drawing) files, and have a file extension of.dwg. The DWG file format is fairly portable, and can be opened by other CAD programs including MicroStation, SIMULIA, and Inventor.
Autodesk Exchange Apps
AutoCAD can exchange files with other AutoCAD products using DXF and DWG files, either by mail or over the Internet through the Autodesk Exchange Apps on Autodesk Exchange, or the SharePoint Web Services. The Exchange Apps are available on the Autodesk Exchange App Store.
AutoCAD is also able to print to PostScript printers. The most popular printer manufacturers are Hewlett-Packard and HP. Many printing companies have the ability to buy AutoCAD drawings from various vendors, at a higher cost than their own internal employees, and then send them to their customers on CD or through the Internet. For a list of Autodesk Exchange Apps for PostScript, see Autodesk Exchange Apps.
Windows and MacOS
AutoCAD may be used on both the Windows and Mac OS platforms. For a list of Autodesk Exchange Apps for Windows and MacOS, see Autodesk Exchange Apps.
The Windows platform includes the operating system itself, the Windows, Microsoft Office, and Microsoft Windows Explorer. Microsoft Windows Explorer is used as the standard file management system on Windows systems. The Microsoft Windows Explorer adds support for AutoCAD and other CAD programs on the system. The Windows platform can automatically copy AutoCAD drawings to a CD or onto a networked file server. These drawings can be transferred to another computer using AutoCAD’s DXF and DWG file formats.
AutoCAD is available as a stand-alone application for Windows, as a client application for both Windows and Mac OS, as an Open Design Alliance member, and as an Active Accessibility application for Windows. AutoCAD LT is a stand-alone version for the Windows platform with fewer features.
AutoCAD LT can be licensed for use on a non-commercial basis.
Mac OS platforms
AutoCAD is available for Mac OS. AutoCAD LT, a stand-alone version of AutoCAD, is also available for the Mac.

What’s New In?
Introducing Markup Assist:
Automate drawing instructions and get more out of your drawings. Markup Assist finds features, generates notations, and even performs registration. (video: 1:05 min.)
Transform drawings and bring clarity to complex engineering designs. Easily insert and apply flowcharts from files, live drawings, or a URL. Then, view flowcharts in any view, editing the flowchart elements any time. (video: 4:54 min.)
See current and updated designs on your monitor. View all CAD files, drawings, and annotations directly from the familiar Livelink Navigator window. Drag and drop files to view them in any application. (video: 1:50 min.)
Now, you can easily see your path through a drawing and directly associate that path with a layer. (video: 1:27 min.)
Improve your line work by measuring your line width, length, and angle. This new tool provides a variety of settings to let you adjust your line style and even automatically apply those changes to the entire drawing. (video: 1:29 min.)
Advanced 3D visualizations:
Quickly and easily see 3D models as 2D wireframes, meshes, or surfaces. Scale and rotate complex 3D models, view faces from the inside out, and even paint with colors. (video: 1:36 min.)
Live Set Up:
Create settings for every file. Create custom profiles that you can apply directly to your drawings. (video: 1:29 min.)
Improve your drafting by viewing the paths and arrows in the drawing and having them show up in your layers. (video: 1:31 min.)
Convert photos and PDFs to raster images for editing and printing. Export images in popular file formats including PDF, PICT, PNG, JPEG, and more. (video: 1:28 min.)
Load and convert EPS, DWG, and SVG files in and out of the drawing, including from design review. (video: 1:29 min.)
Use and edit images and photos directly from the media artboard. You can easily view artboards in any drawing and customize the
